Final Diagnosis -- Case 78 - UPMC - Department of Pathology

Acute interstitial nephritis is commonly due to a drug hypersensitivity reaction and presents as sudden-onset acute kidney injury. Acute interstitial nephritis is discussed in detail in the separate Interstitial Nephritides and Nephrotoxins article. Interstitial nephritis may be temporary (acute), or it may be long-lasting (chronic) and get worse over time. The acute form of interstitial nephritis is most often caused by side effects of certain drugs. The following can cause interstitial nephritis: Allergic reaction to a drug (acute interstitial allergic nephritis). Chronic interstitial nephritis is much less common, and is usually caused by another chronic disease.

[kidneyhealthy.com] Pathogenesis Etiology Often unknown etiology. Nephrotic syndrome is a group of symptoms that show your kidneys are not working as well as they should. These symptoms include too much protein in your urine, not enough protein in your blood, too much fat or cholesterol in your blood, and swelling. Treatment is the same as that of chronic kidney disease, sometimes including kidney transplantation. (See also Overview of Nephritic Syndrome.) Hereditary nephritis is a nephritic syndrome caused by a mutation in the COL4A3, COL4A4, and COL4A5 genes that encode the alpha-5 chain of type IV collagen and results in altered type IV collagen strands. Chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN) is more common than acute TIN Renal Biopsy: small lymphocytes, plasma cells and monocytes in the interstitium with tubular atrophy and fibrosis Causes. The influence of overeating and of injudicious eating in producing chronic nephritis is so generally appreciated that it scarcely needs discussion.
