Lemierres syndrom är en möjlig komplikation av en allvarlig, obehandlad halsen eller tonsill infektion.

It happens when colonies of bacteria, typically in the throat, ears, or mouth, invade tissues in the neck and form an infected blood clot in the jugular vein – the vessel that transports blood away from the neck. Lemierre's syndrome refers to infectious thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. It most often develops as a complication of a bacterial sore throat infection in young, otherwise healthy adults. The thrombophlebitis is a serious condition and may lead to further systemic complications such as bacteria in the blood or septic emboli. Lemierre’s syndrome is a potentially fatal condition that is characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein secondary to oropharyngeal infection with potential embolization to the lungs as well as other organs. Lemierre Syndrome is a clinical diagnosis based on the presence of the four cardinal features of tonsillopharyngitis, bacteremia, internal jugular vein thrombophlebitis, and metastatic abscesses. Standard throat cultures will typically be negative.
